Welcome to Pubbastun
Pubbastun is the iconic venue for alternative and non-commercial music on the Åland Islands – a platform for artists with distinctive voices. We curate a stage for the unique, the boundary-breaking, and the innovative – all right here on these peaceful Nordic islands.
Since opening its doors in 1974, Pubbastun has grown into a cherished cultural landmark. The venue is housed in a former public sauna from 1930, and still carries its original character – both in architecture and atmosphere. Tucked away among the pine trees in Mariehamn’s Badhusparken, its intimate setting creates the perfect stage for unforgettable live shows.
Over the decades, Bastun has welcomed a wide range of artists – from Åland’s own pioneers to internationally renowned acts such as José González, The Hellacopters, Bob Hund, Entombed, Looptroop, and Jens Lekman. It remains a space where raw, unfiltered music thrives – and where the underground still has a voice.
The Name: Why "Pubbastun"?
The name “Pubbastun” combines the Swedish words pub and bastun (the sauna), reflecting both the building’s history and its cultural role. When the old public sauna in Mariehamn was transformed into a music venue in 1974, the name came to represent more than just the physical space – it became a symbol for grassroots culture, creative freedom, and the DIY spirit. Keeping the name honors our roots while celebrating everything Bastun stands for today.
Who Runs Pubbastun?
Pubbastun is operated by the non-profit youth association Träffpunkt Ungdom r.f., founded in 1972. Every event is powered by volunteers – people passionate about live music, alternative culture, and community. From booking bands and running the bar to sound and lighting, it’s all done through teamwork, dedication, and a love for what we do.
When Are We Open?
Pubbastun doesn’t have fixed opening hours. We open our doors only for scheduled events – live shows, open mic nights, or social gatherings. All upcoming events are announced in advance on our website and social media. If there’s no event, the venue stays closed – so keep an eye out, and don’t miss the next night of loud music and warm atmosphere.
